First Year Students
-
Step 1: Have you signed up for orientation?
Start by signing up! You will register for your classes during your orientation date, so we highly encourage choosing the earliest date available for you.
For more information and the sign-up instructions, click here.
-
Step 2: Set up an appointment with your academic advisor!
If we know you are planning to major in SPCEET, your academic advisor will reach out to you via orientation registration rosters before your orientation date. But, you do not have to wait for us to reach out to you. Please schedule an appointment with your advisor using MS Bookings We are currently advising students virtually, by phone, and face-to-face so click here for steps to schedule an appointment.
You can also email your academic advisor by review the Advisors tab to the left.
-
Step 3: Math is Important!
Depending on what math class you are eligible to start in will also affect which science course are available for you to take during your first semester at KSU. All SPCEET majors require at least up to MATH 1190 (Calculus I) as part of your degree requirements.
Your high school information (and/or transfer credit) dictates your specific math course eligibility.
MATH 1111 – College Algebra: Anyone can start here, but you might be able to start higher
MATH 1113 – Precalculus: You can start here if you have a SAT Math score of a 570 and above (or ACT Math 23 and above) AND a high school GPA of a 2.8 and higher
MATH 1190 – Calculus I: You can start here is you have a SAT Math score of 620 and above (or ACT Math 26 and above) AND a high school GPA of a 3.2 and above
Think you can qualify for a higher math class than what your high school information states? Take the ALEKS math placement exam.
**Please email your academic advisor if you have questions about ALEKS or need to get the ALEKS code**
Step 3a: Be ready when your time ticket opens! Start here for steps on registration day.
You are assigned a time ticket in your Owl Express. TO check your time ticket, please go to Owl Express and under the Registration tab, click “Registration Status and Time Ticket”
Check and ensure you know your time ticket assignment.
Check your degree Plan Degree Works. Click the Registration tab in Owl Express and click “Degree Works”. When you are in Degree Works click the “Plans” tab.
Your academic advisor may have started a plan for you in Degree Works. They should have also emailed you a registration guide or a major specific flow chart with recommended classes and/or course suggestions for the upcoming semester(s).
Email (link to About Tab on left) if you have questions.
Step 3b: Register for Courses!
Use the information on the Registrar’s website to help with the registration process. Still have questions? Email your academic advisor with your KSU ID # and what registration issue you are encountering.
During orientation, SPCEET advisors are available through Microsoft Teams to help answer your registration questions. You will be added to the orientation Teams and specific channel for your major the day before your orientation session. You will receive an email confirming you have been added as well as an email with instructions on how to access the Microsoft Team.
-
Step 4: Complete these items before classes start.
If you are unsure about your schedule, email your academic advisor for confirmation.
Check your schedule in Owl Express. Check the Registration tab. Make sure to select the term you want to view.
Check where your classes are on the KSU Campus Map.
- If scheduling classes on both campuses, please keep these tips in mind:
-
- If scheduling classes on both campuses on the same day(s) leave at least an hour and half in between those classes for travel time to/from each campus. This will account for travel time including potential traffic and parking.
- If your classes are on the same campus, it is fine to leave 10-15 minutes in between classes.
- Be mindful of part-time and full-time status. Part-time is defined as 11 credit hours or less. Full-time is defined as 12 or more credit hours.
- Pay attention to the KSU semester calendar. Check the academic calendars here!
Check out some of KSU’s resources for students at the bottom of this page.
