2018 Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

ACEC Georgia's second annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, held on Saturday, March 10, was attended by more than 250 upper elementary and middle school age students. Firms and organizations from across Georgia's engineering community participated in the half-day program held at Kennesaw State University's Marietta campus, which featured over 30 different booths and team trivia bowl. Angela Fanney, a engineer with Kimley-Horn, kicked-off the event with an inspirational talk.

Georgia Association for Career and Technical Education 70th Annual Conference

Dr. Thomas Fallon, professor of Computer Engineering, and Greg Conrey, professor of
Mechanical Engineering Technology, attend the Georgia Association for Career and Technical
Education (GACTE) 70th Annual Conference, at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel & Cobb
Galleria Centre on July 10th, to advocate for Kennesaw State University’s Southern
Polytechnic Department of Engineering and Engineering Technology – in order to influence
issues and policies that impact career, technical, and agricultural education in Georgia
and Nationwide. Fallon and Conrey are working to enhance the education system through
leadership – by developing a fierce workforce, as well as heightening job performance
and satisfaction through the Technical College System of Georgia program (TCSG) and
KSU’s Master’s programs.
Engineers Help Build a Better World: Control Systems

Dr. Hai Ho, chair of the Department of Computer Engineering, presented “Engineers
Help Build a Better World: Control Systems,” at the South Cobb Regional Library in
Mableton, GA on Wednesday, June 21st. The program idea came from the National Public
Library Summer Reading theme, “Build a Better World.” The target audience for the
program were students, parents, and adults interested in engineering. The actual attendees
were elementary, middle, and high school students, their parents, and some additional
adults. Among the attendees was Cindy Holmberg, Librarian at the South Cobb Regional
Library. She said the following about the program, “Having a husband that is a Civil
Engineer, and an alum of Southern Polytechnic, I have a personal knowledge of what
engineers do to help communities “Build a Better World.” I also had heard and read
about the shortages of qualified engineers, and asked Dr. Ho to talk about the exciting
career program opportunities available at Kennesaw State University.”
Dr. Ho covered the basics of control systems, breaking the subject down in simple terms - even the youngest attendee could understand. He presented real world examples: robots, drones, windmills, solar thermal plant, and more. Throughout the presentation, Dr. Ho talked about the importance of engineering in our world today. The Q&A from attendees revealed several middle schoolers and a high school student interested in robotics and computer engineering. The library hopes to partner with Kennesaw State University in the future on another great program.
